Mushroom

The world-renowned Mushroom® (F560) armchair, designed by Pierre Paulin, is a timeless icon created for every generation. Part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, it represents a harmonious balance of sensitivity, strength and enduring comfort – a work of art designed for everyday living.

Pierre Paulin’s first collaboration with Artifort, Mushroom® Chair marked a significant milestone in furniture design. It was the first chair to fully conceal its structural components within a single, sculptural form. A tubular steel frame, shaped into interconnected circular curves, is enveloped in foam and finished with stretch fabric, creating an innovative construction approach that was groundbreaking at the time.

In the early development of the chair, Paulin experimented with swimsuit fabrics before Artifort’s Harry Wagemans introduced a durable, elastic upholstery material suited to the design. Paulin regarded Mushroom® Chair as “economically, mechanically, financially…the best seat I have created”, reflecting his belief in its exceptional combination of form, function and practicality.

Today, Mushroom® continues to be celebrated as a design classic, admired for its distinctive silhouette, pioneering construction and ability to provide effortless comfort across generations.
