“We are a furniture and product design house out of Los Angeles, CA. We design functional products for the home and public spaces. We make furniture, lighting and other goods, with a commitment to being innovative and playful.”
Founded in 2010 by sculptor and designer Gaurav Nanda, Bend is based on Nanda’s passion for making functional yet sculptural objects. The Michigan born entrepreneur spent many childhood summers vacationing with his family in the Palm Springs California sunshine and he credits these trips for immersing him in Mid-Century Modern architecture, design and lifestyle. Those things would later influence his decision top leave his corporate job at GM, where he was a vehicle interior model sculptor and put his stamp on the era of design that had inspired him for so long.
Garauv’s vision to establish Bend as much more than a range of furniture has been realised, it’s a lifestyle. The Bend team design products for their lives as much as they do for ours. Bend recently moved their headquarters into Bend House, a 1920’s Spanish style home in the heart of Los Angeles. The house has been a great platform to show how they live Bend as a lifestyle, which is also regularly shared on their social media.
Working exclusively with iron, their products are comprised of intricate patterns of wire formed through a method of shaping by hand, spot welding and a process referred to as ‘bending’. Each bend of a chair is carefully made to achieve the utmost structural strength, while the angles of the back, the curvature of the seat and the distance between the wires are designed to promote comfort and utility. The quality of a Bend product is in the detail: the inviting shapes, the sparks of colour, the ease of assembly and the packaging. Each element embodies Bend’s commitment for making iconic and sustainable products.
Bend are committed to considering issues of environmental impact and responsible manufacturing processes. Their work team are treated with the utmost respect while their facilities minimize waste. All products are constructed from iron, an inexhaustible and highly recyclable resource, or timber that is sustainable and locally sourced. Packaging is carefully considered for long distance shipping, minimising the companies carbon footprint.
