With F500 series, Geoffrey D. Harcourt RDI introduced a new perspective on lounging in the 1960s – one that embraced informality, intuition and the natural movements of the human body. The inspiration was simple yet meaningful: his partner often sat cross-legged, adopting a relaxed and feminine posture that inspired Harcourt to create a chair that adapts to the sitter rather than imposing a fixed way of sitting.
F500 reflects this philosophy through its broad, inviting shell, offering generous space for a variety of seating positions while maintaining exceptional support and comfort. The sculptural form is elevated by a swivelling metal base, giving the design a sense of lightness and a contemporary character.
F584, F585 and F586 models introduce a refined design detail within F500 collection: a stitched flat trim that follows the contours of the upholstered shell. This subtle feature accentuates the chair’s silhouette while highlighting the craftsmanship and attention to detail behind every element. The result is a lounge chair that balances visual harmony with exceptional comfort – a welcoming retreat designed for relaxation and restoration.
Like other models in F500 series, these variations are available with either high or low backrest options and a choice of swivelling trumpet or cross bases. This flexibility allows the chairs to complement a wide range of interiors while maintaining their distinctive identity, comfort and design integrity.
What began as a personal observation has evolved into a globally recognised family of lounge chairs. F500 series continues to be celebrated for its timeless aesthetic, ergonomic excellence and ability to adapt across generations and interiors. A true design classic, it retains its relevance and appeal – from its origins in the past to contemporary spaces today and into the future.
